Hamburg has to learn French
Hamburg has enjoyed a longstanding relationship with France. In the 17th century, Hamburg offered asylum to French emigrants and persecuted French Protestants, the Huguenots. During the Napoleonic era, Hamburg was known as “bonne ville de l’Empire français” and belonged to France from 1806 to 1814.
The French influence on Hamburg’s urban landscape is still clearly visible today. Alexis de Chateauneuf, the son of French emigrants, designed the Alster Arcades, the Alte Post and the Schleusenbrücken, leaving a lasting architectural mark on the city centre.
French influence can also be found in many other places throughout Hamburg. Augustin Lancelot de Quatre Barbes, for example, brought Parisian flair to the city when he opened the famous Alsterpavillon, which remains one of Hamburg’s most beloved locations.
